Anim. Breed., 59, 345-349, doi:10.5194/aab-59-345-2016, 2016 Short summary In this study, the effects of a diet including fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) seed on feed consumption and milk performance were examined. A total of 24 buffaloes were randomly divided into two groups. The diet containing ground fenugreek seed improved total dry matter and daily concentrated feed consumption and significantly increased milk production in Anatolian water buffaloes (AWBs). In future work, the use of other herbs in AWB may be investigated. Hide 14 Jul 2016 Genetic relationship of lactation persistency with milk yield, somatic cell score, reproductive traits, and longevity in Slovak Holstein cattle Eva Strapáková, Juraj Candrák, and Peter Strapák Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 329-335, doi:10.5194/aab-59-329-2016, 2016 Short summary The advantages of increasing lactation persistency in dairy cattle are indisputable on the practical herd level. More persistent lactation brings a longer high-production period. In this study estimate the breeding values of lactation persistency, test day of milk yield, somatic cell score, reproductive traits (calving interval, days open), and longevity in Slovak Holstein dairy cattle were estimated and the relationship between persistency of lactation and other selected trait was analyzed. Hide 14 Jul 2016 Multivariate characterization of morphological traits in West African cattle sires Amadou Traoré, Delphin O. Koudandé, Iván Fernández, Albert Soudré, Isabel álvarez, Siaka Diarra, Fousseyni Diarra, Adama Kaboré, Moumouni Sanou, Hamidou H. Tamboura, and Félix Goyache Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 337-344, doi:10.5194/aab-59-337-2016, 2016 Short summary Body traits (16 body measurements and 18 qualitative traits) have been analysed in 183 adult sires belonging to nine West African cattle breeds via multifactorial methods to ascertain breeding preferences of African farmers. No clear patterns of homogenisation of the appearance of individuals within cattle breed could be assessed. Since no selection programmes exist and unsupervised matings are the rule, differentiation among African livestock breeds cannot be assessed in European terms. Hide 12 Jul 2016 Difference in fatty acid composition and related nutritional indices of meat between two lines of slow-growing chickens slaughtered at different ages Teodora Popova, Maya Ignatova, Evgeni Petkov, and Nikola Stani?i? Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 319-327, doi:10.5194/aab-59-319-2016, 2016 Short summary Fatty acids and nutritional indices in meat were studied in La Belle and White Plymouth Rock birds at 9 and 18 weeks of age. The study is the first in Bulgaria to assess the potential of lines of the national gene pool to produce slow-growing chickens with a high quality of meat in regard to its lipid profile, affected by line and age of the birds. Total monounsaturated fatty acids decreased, but polyunsaturated acids increased with age, leading to beneficial changes in the nutritional indices. Hide 28 Jun 2016 Ratings of equine conformation – new insights provided by shape analysis using the example of Lipizzan stallions Thomas Druml, Maximilian Dobretsberger, and Gottfried Brem Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 309-317, doi:10.5194/aab-59-309-2016, 2016 Short summary We analyzed the relationship between visual ratings of equine conformation and the underlying morphological horse shapes. The rater agreement of eight professional classifiers ranged from 0.30 to 0.55 (correlation). We present a methodological approach, where we associate the individual scores with the horse shapes derived from images, So we can test if the ratings correspond with the observed shape variation. In 58 % of the ratings no association between scores and the phenotypes was found. Hide 21 Jun 2016 AGPAT6 gene EX1_303T > C and EX12_299G > A mutations and associations with economic traits of Chinese Simmental-cross cattle Xiaojuan Long, Xibi Fang, Ping Jiang, Hang Xiao, Haibin Yu, Mengjiao Zhou, Yunzhi Pan, Chunyan Lu, Zhihui Zhao, and Runjun Yang Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 301-307, doi:10.5194/aab-59-301-2016, 2016 Short summary AGPAT6 is a key candidate gene in the lipid metabolism pathway. We detected two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in bovine AGPAT6 exons, and we analyzed 33 traits associated with meat quality and the carcass of Chinese Simmental cattle. SNP1 was significantly associated with back fat thickness and fat coverage rate. SNP2 was significantly associated with fat coverage rate and marbling score. Thus, the SNPs of AGPAT6 may be genetic factors influencing carcass composition of beef cattle. Hide 17 Jun 2016 Effects of mannan oligosaccharide and Curcuma xanthorrhiza essential oil on the intestinal morphologyand stress indicators of broilers subjected to cyclic heat stress Seyed Mohammad Hosseini, Hasan Nazarizadeh, Saeede Ahani, and Masoume Vakili Azghandi Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 285-291, doi:10.5194/aab-59-285-2016, 2016 17 Jun 2016 Chemical, physical and technological properties of milk as affected by the mycotoxin load of dairy herds Ludmila K?í?ová, Oto Hanu?, Marcela Klime?ová, Jan Nedělník, Josef Ku?era, Petr Roubal, Jaroslav Kopecky, and Radoslava Jedelská Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 293-300, doi:10.5194/aab-59-293-2016, 2016 Short summary The aim of the study was to determine the impacts of different levels of mycotoxin load of dairy herds on the milk indicators. During three subsequent years, samples of feedstuffs and individual milk were collected from four herds of Czech Fleckvieh and from four herds of Holstein cows. The most frequently occurring mycotoxins were fumonisins, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone. Changes were noted in some milk indicators such as fat, acetone, pH, electric conductivity, alcohol stability, or curd quality. Hide 15 Jun 2016 Detection of one large insertion/deletion (indel) and two novel SNPs within the SPEF2 gene and their associations with male piglet reproduction traits Rui Chen, Shuai Yu, Fa Ren, Xiao Yan Lv, and Chuan Ying Pan Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 275-283, doi:10.5194/aab-59-275-2016, 2016 Short summary Allele "D" (deletion) within the insertion/deletion of SPEF2 gene was dominant in male Large White and Landrace pigs from China. In addition, two novel single-nucleotide polymorphisms of this gene were first identified in pigs. NC_010458:g.19886C > G was significantly associated with testis long circumference (P < 0.05). These findings could not only extend the spectrum of genetic variations of pig SPEF2 gene but also contribute to implementing MAS in pigs. Hide 14 Jun 2016 Differential expression of six genes in fat-type Hungarian Mangalica and other pigs Károly Tempfli, Barbara Kiss, Klaudia Szalai, Zoltán Simon, László Pongrácz, and ágnes Bali Papp Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 259-265, doi:10.5194/aab-59-259-2016, 2016 Short summary In order to identify potential variances in gene expression of phenotypically different pig breeds, six fat-metabolism-related genes were analyzed in backfat and muscle tissues of fat-type Mangalica, Mangalica × Duroc, and lean-type Hungarian Large White and Pietrain × Duroc pigs by means of quantitative reverse transcription PCR. The identified expression differences can improve our understanding of the genetic background behind the characteristic fatty phenotype of Mangalica. Hide 14 Jun 2016 Identification of TRPM6 and TRPM7 expression changes in response to a diet supplemented with inulin in porcine kidney Paulina Robak, Ma?gorzata O?go, Katarzyna Micha?ek, Agnieszka Kolasa-Wo?osiuk, Marcin Taciak, Marcin Barszcz, and Marta Marynowska Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 267-274, doi:10.5194/aab-59-267-2016, 2016 07 Jun 2016 Effects of in-yolk-sac administration of carvacrol on cholesterol resorption from yolk residuals and physiological adaptive indicators in broiler chicks exposed to neonatal fasting Mir Hasan Beiranvand, Heshmatollah Khosravinia, Arash Azarfar, and Ezatollah Rafiei Alavai Arch. Anim. Breed., 59, 249-257, doi:10.5194/aab-59-249-2016, 2016 Short summary The results of this study revealed that in-yolk-sac administration of carvacrol, as the main phenolic monoterpen in Satureja khuzestanica, had no effect on the rate of cholesterol absorption from yolk sac residuals in neonate commercial broiler chicks. This finding suggests that the hypocholesterolemic activity of carvacrol in broiler chicks might be exerted through other mechanisms rather than reduced cholesterol absorption and deserves further investigation.
